The inherent characteristics of carbon dioxide, in addition to its good heat transmission properties, lie in its high volumetric refrigeration capacity, allowing the use of small-displacement compressors, and excellent thermodynamic efficiency at low and medium temperatures. The peculiarity of carbon dioxide compared to other refrigerants is that specific systems are required to cope with its characteristic pressure/temperature (P/T) diagram.
It is not toxic, not flammable, not subject to any patent, and there are no usage limitations worldwide. These factors make production and distribution costs relatively low compared to other refrigerants.
